Lea and Perrins Worcestershire Sauce is NOT affected by the food safety alert, involving the presence of sudan 1 dye in another Worcester sauce, that has been widely reported in the media over the recent weeks. Our ingredients and product are routinely tested by independent laboratories and certified safe. Consumers can therefore continue to safely enjoy Lea and Perrins Worcestershire Sauce – the Original and Genuine product with the highest quality standards, first manufactured in 1835 and now sold in over 100 countries worldwide.   Do you make a vegetarian version of Worcestershire Sauce? No. Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce is made to the original recipe created in 1837 and contains anchovies - a type of fish. We believe that altering the recipe to exclude a key ingredient such as anchovies would mean that Lea & Perrins would no longer be the 'original and genuine' Worcestershire Sauce, as claimed on the bottle.   Is the Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce sold in the US the same as the sauce sold in the rest of the world? Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce is made to the original recipe in two factories. The original factory in Worcester, and a sister factory in New Jersey USA. The New Jersey factory follows the same recipe as the Worcester factory, although some ingredients are sourced locally. Product sold in the rest of the world is manufactured and exported from our factory in Worcester, UK. (Worcester refers to the town itself, whilst Worcestershire indicates the 'shire' or county in which the town of Worcester is located).   Why does the Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce sold in USA and Philippines have a brown paper wrapper? When Lea & Perrins first started exporting Worcestershire sauce around the world, it was found that some of the bottles would break during the lengthy sea voyage. A practice of wrapping each bottle individually in a paper wrapper was devised to protect the bottles and prevent breakage. In some countries the practice of wrapping bottles, although no longer technically necessary, has endured. The distinctive paper wrapper with Lea & Perrins branding printed on the front has become the recognised format in those countries and reassures customers that they are indeed purchasing the 'original and genuine' product.   Why does the Lea & Perrins label go right round the bottle obscuring the level remaining? The label like the product, is kept as close as possible to its original design. This continues the tradition of 'The Original and Genuine Lea and Perrins Worcestershire Sauce'.   Is Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce gluten free? Whilst Lea & Perrins Inc (New Jersey) is listed in the USA, it is not listed in the UK directory. This is because the Lea & Perrins brand is owned by HP Foods (UK) Ltd, which is listed as such. Until very recently, our recipe for Sweet 'n Spicy had not changed. When we first changed the packaging and introduced our steak sauces in plastic bottles, the Sweet 'n Spicy recipe remained the same, but we in fact recently updated the recipe. Our Sweet 'n Spicy Steak Sauce is now made with Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce, and this has changed the flavour and added more spiciness to it. We introduced our Traditional Sauce and updated the Sweet 'n Spicy recipe based on feedback we received from some consumers and our desire to offer the best flavours possible.
